What Friday Night Funkin' is
Friday Night Funkin' (FNF) is a rhythm game made by ninjamuffin99 with music by Kawai Sprite, first released on Newgrounds as a game jam entry and later grown into a long-running open-source project. You play Boyfriend, a small rapper with a blue cap, who has to win sing-off battles before Girlfriend's family will accept him. Girlfriend sits on a pair of speakers behind you for every song.
Each song is a duet in turns. Your opponent sings a phrase, then it is your turn to answer it. Arrows scroll toward four fixed markers on your side of the screen, and you press the matching direction at the moment an arrow lines up with its marker. Long notes have a tail, so you keep the key held down until the tail runs out.
Controls
- Arrow keys or W A S D: left, down, up and right notes.
- Enter: confirm in menus and start a song.
- Esc or Backspace: go back a menu.
Most players put two fingers of each hand on the keys, because later songs throw two or three arrows at once and one hand cannot cover them.
The health bar
The bar at the bottom works like a tug of war. Every note you hit pulls it toward your icon; every note you miss, or every key you press with no arrow there, lets it slide toward the opponent. If it reaches the far end, the song is lost and you retry from the start. Each hit is graded by timing, from "Sick" for a near-perfect press down through "Good", "Bad" and "Shit", and the grades add up to your score and accuracy for the song.
Story Mode, Free Play and difficulty
Story Mode groups songs into "weeks". A week is three songs against one rival, played back to back, and you must clear all of them to finish it. The opening rival is Daddy Dearest, Girlfriend's rock-star father; later weeks bring Skid and Pump, Pico, Mommy Mearest, a Christmas stage, the dating-sim world of Senpai, and Tankman. Free Play lets you pick any unlocked song on its own, which is the best way to practise a track that keeps beating you.
Every song has Easy, Normal and Hard charts. Hard is not just faster: it adds more notes and more chords. Start a new week on Easy or Normal to learn the pattern, then move up.
Tips for clearing harder songs
- Listen as much as you look. Notes sit on the beat or the melody, so the song tells you when to press.
- Do not mash. Pressing with no note on the marker counts as a miss and drains health.
- Watch the opponent's turn. Your answer is often close to the phrase you just heard.
- Use the volume. Playing with the sound off makes timing much harder.
Playing it here
This page runs the browser version of the game in the frame above. Press Play, wait for the title screen, then press Enter. It needs a keyboard, so it plays best on a laptop, desktop or Chromebook; on a phone without a keyboard the notes cannot be hit properly. Your progress is kept by your browser, so clearing site data resets it.
